China and Venezuela signed a contract for VRSS-1 remote sensing satellite program on May 26, 2011, in Caracas, the capital city of Venezuela. Mr. Ricardo Menendez Prieto, Minister of MPPCTII and Mr. Yin Liming, president of China Great Wall Industry Corporation (CGWIC), executed the contract as the representative of each party.
According to the contract, CGWIC, as prime contractor, together with subcontractors of spacecraft, launch vehicle, ground control and ground application system，will perform the project on an in-orbit deliver basis.
VRSS-1 satellite on onboard CAST 2000 platform will be developed and manufactured by China Academy of Space Technology (CAST). The ground application system, such as remote sensing data and images receiving stations, will also be built by CAST. It will be launched by an LM-2D launch vehicle developed by Shanghai Academy of Space Technology (SAST), from Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center (XSLC). China Satellite Launch and Tracking & Control General (CLTC) is responsible for launch operation and TT&C services.
VRSS-1 will be the first remote sensing satellite system of Venezuela, which will be mainly used for earth resource investigation, environmental protection, disaster monitoring and management, crops yield estimation and city planning etc.
