- October 16, 1980 --- Creation of China Great Wall Industry
Corporation (CGWIC), the first Chinese foreign trading company
dedicated to the space technological service as well as international
trade of space products.
- October 26, 1985 --- Chinese government announced the entry
of Long March launch vehicles into international market. CGWIC
was then appointed as the exclusive agent for Chinese international
commercial launch services and satellite cooperation.
- June 16, 1987 --- First commercial piggyback services contract
of the Long March launch vehicle signed at the Paris Air Show
with CGWIC as prime contractor of the launcher and Matra as client.
A micro-gravity instrument was the contracted piggyback payload,
while the main payload was a Chinese recoverable satellite.
- August 5~10, 1987 --- The first commercial piggyback mission
was conducted. On August 5, the 15th mission of Long March a LM-2C
successfully sent into orbit two pieces of micro-gravity instruments
as piggyback payloads together with the main payload - the 9th
Chinese recoverable satellite. The payloads were recovered on
10th August.
- November 1, 1988 --- First commercial satellite launch services
contract signed with Hughes, a US satellite manufacturer, in which
LM-2E rockets were selected to launch two AUSSAT-B satellites
for Australia.
- April 7, 1990 --- First flight of a foreign made communications
satellite on board Chinese launcher. From Xichang Satellite Launch
Site, a LM-3 rocket successfully and precisely sent the Hughes-made
AsiaSat-1 satellite into GTO. This success symbolized the entry
`of Chinese launchers into the international commercial launch
services market. China provided for the first time a launch campaign
through live TV broadcast.
- July 16, 1990 --- Maiden flight of LM-2E, successfully sending
a dummy payload and a Pakistani satellite as piggyback payload
into orbit. Based on the mature launch vehicle technology , and
through 18 months' hard work, LM-2E was developed for the international
market. This new version has increased Long March's LEO capability
to 9.5 tons.
- April 24,1992---A Launch Services Contract was signed with INTELSAT
to launch INTELSAT 708 communication satellite using LM-3B.
- December 21, 1992---The launch of LM-2E for AUSSAT-B, a Hughes
built communication satellite, was conducted at Xichang Satellite
Launch Center. The satellite was exploded 48 seconds after lift-off.
The Chinese commercial launch services experienced a failure for
the first time.
- April 28, 1993---A launch services contract was signed between
CGWIC and MOTOROLA to launch the IRIDIUM satellite using LM-2C/SD
launch vehicles. The Contract includes 11 launches, with each
launch for 2 IRIDIUM satellites.
- 1993 --- Important reform of company's structure took place.
With CGWIC as the core enterprise, China Aerospace Great Wall
Group was formed. The group was consisted of business divisions,
functional departments, branches, and multiple specialized companies
to operate a wide business area including general import and export
, consulting, international exhibition, civil engineering, transportation,
property management and tourism.
- 1993 --- CGWIC ranked 51 in the selections of 100 most famous
enterprises nationwide by China Enterprise Association.
- 1995 --- CGWIC was selected by the State Administration Bureau
of State Property to be listed in the official publication "The
Backbone of China - the Best 500 State Owned Enterprises". CGWIC
was the only one selected from the space industry.
- 1995 --- CGWIC was ranked as the 6th biggest national enterprise
nationwide with its by export volume of mechanical and electrical
products, and the 9th biggest with its import volume of technology
and equipment.
- November 28,1995---The LM-2E with EPKM (a Solid Perigee Kick
Motor) successfully launched Asiasat 2 communications satellite
at Xichang Satellite Launch Center. This indicated a new break
though of the solid motor technology in China.
- February 15, 1996---The maiden flight of LM-3B, the most powerful
launch vehicle in Long March, was performed to launch INTELSAT
708. Twenty-two seconds after lift-off, the launch vehicle innertial
platform slanted and the launch vehicle impacted to ground. Both
the launch vehicle and the satellite were crashed. This failure
damaged the confidence of international customer and insurance
communities to Long March, and resulted in a severe setback of
the Chinese Launch Services. The China Space Industry conducted
a thorough failure investigation and picked up a series of corrective
measures to enhance the reliability during the year that followed.
Eighteen months after the failure, the LM-3B launch was resumed
and made a success.
- October 1996 --- Move to the new office building - "Aerospace
Great Wall Plaza" located in Haidian District, Beijing. With 42,000
m2 of construction area, the new company building was finished
with total investment of 380 million RMB.
- August 20, 1997 --- The resumed launch of LM-3B - successfully
sending the Philippine - Mabuhay satellite Agila¢̣into GTO. This
increased Long March's GTO capability from 2.6 tons to 5.2 tons.
- September 1, 1997 --- Test flight of LM-2C/SD, successfully
sending two dummy payloads into orbit from Taiyuan Satellite Launch
Site.
- December 8, 1997 --- The first deployment launch by Long March
launch vehicles for Iridium constellation. 2 Iridium satellites
on top of a LM-2C/SD. According to the launch services contract
between CGWIC and Motorola, 11 launches will be performed using
LM-2C/SD, sending 22 of the total 66 satellites into LEO orbits.
- July 18, 1998 --- First European made communications satellite
launched by Long March. A LM-3B rocket successfully sent SinoSat-1
into GTO.
- Decmber 30,2002---The LM-2F successfully launched Shenzhou-4
spacecraft, indicating that the Long March vehicles have accomplished
27 consecutive successful lauunches since Oct.1996. From the commercial
launch to present, commercial launch services made up 56% of its
total launches in the Long March family;22 commercial launch missions
have been successfully completed, sending 27 international satelites
and 5 piggy-back payload into orbit.
- On December 27, 2004, China Great Wall Industry Corporation (CGWIC)¡¯s reorganization ceremony was grandly held at Diaoyutai State Guesthouse. After reorganization, as a wholly owned subsidiary of China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC), CGWIC is the important platform for CASC¡¯s international economical and technological cooperation. Mr. Wang Haibo assumes office of new president of CGWIC.
